Commercial real estate properties represent nearly 16 billion square feet of floorspace. These properties consume more than 17% of all commercial building energy use and spend more than $32 billion annually on energy.
Healthcare Sector
Healthcare facilities are the third most energy-intensive facility type in the United States, spending more than $11.5 billion on energy every year. In total, the sector constitutes 4.2 billion square feet of floorspace. 
The higher education sector spends an estimated $6.5 billion on annual energy costs and totals about 5 billion square feet of floorspace.
The Hospitality sector includes more than 4.1 billion square feet of floor area nationally, encompassing nearly 5 million guest rooms. Every year, the hospitality sector spends more than $7.3 billion on energy.
The retail, food service, and grocery sectors spend over $41 billion on energy costs a year, and represent 14.4 billion square feet of floorspace in the U.S.
