The number of AFV and HEV models grew consistently from 1991 to 2002 as FFVs gained popularity. The models dropped between 2002 and 2006 as OEMs reduced the variety of FFVs available. The number of AFVs and HEVs has been growing rapidly ever since, with the exception of the recession-induced reduction in 2010 and a slight reduction in 2015 possibly due to low gasoline prices. Subsidiaries of "The Big 3" manufacturers have brought two-thirds of the AFVs to market throughout the past 26 years.
