Strategic Energy Management Checklist: Use this checklist to conduct a high-level assessment of your energy management program and identify steps you can take to move to the next level. Select the energy management activities you have already completed and identify missing elements needed to achieve Superior Energy Performance® (SEP™) certification or ISO 50001.
DOE eGuide: This cornerstone resource provides easy-to-follow steps for addressing key parts of the ISO 50001 standard. Dig deeper into each step to learn about relevant activities and timing; find forms, checklists, and templates to use. Whether your facility has a mature EnMS or is just getting started, this free, comprehensive online guide makes energy management easier.
DOE Energy Performance Indicator (EnPI) Tool: Establish your facility’s energy consumption baseline and start tracking energy performance indicators and energy savings over time. As you input monthly or weekly energy data, this tool will identify key variables affecting energy performance and will track metrics needed for SEP and other efficiency programs.
Automated Register of Implemented Actions: Organize and track your energy performance with the “Register,” designed to assist you in your path towards SEP certification and complementary to the SEP Measurement and Verification (M&V) Protocol. For each energy performance improvement action conducted at your facility, the Register provides one place to store and summarize all the key details to provide the necessary documentation for the bottom-up comparison of energy performance improvement.
Webinars: Learn from SEP-certified facilities about how they addressed measured energy performance improvement, taking into account facility expansions and alternative energy sources such as renewable energy and combined heat and power.

System Assessment Standards, available to define the requirements for conducting assessments for compressed air, process heating, pumping, or steam systems: collecting and analyzing data and reporting and documenting findings. Guidance documents are also available. While use of these standards is not required, they can be valuable for finding ways to quickly achieve energy savings.
ENERGY STAR energy management guidelines: Start building a strategic energy management program using these guidelines and best practices. ENERGY STAR also provides other industrial energy management and buildings energy management resources.

In addition to developing tools and resources to assist in the implementation of ISO 50001 and SEP, DOE has developed and supports the Certified Practitioners in EnMS training that instruct on the combination of skill sets—energy efficiency and continual business improvement. The Institute of Energy Management Professionals (IEnMP) maintains a list of trained, experienced, and qualified experts who help companies establish a structured ISO 50001 energy management system and all aspects of implementing ISO 50001. ISO 50001/SEP Trainers are also available to provide in-house ISO 50001 and SEP training for organizations. These experts are qualified CP EnMS who are trained to teach the DOE curriculum used by leading businesses that have successfully achieved ISO 50001 and SEP certification. Train Your Staff
Facility staff members gain valuable expertise by attending the training to become a Certified Practitioner in Energy Management Systems (CP EnMS).
Some companies have found that having this expertise available in-house is useful to implement ISO 50001/SEP and expand it to other facilities within the corporation. Though this training prepares professionals for the CP EnMS exam, taking the exam is not required. Learn more about how to become an energy management professional.
Enhanced Support for Better Plants Partners
Additional technical assistance from DOE is available to facilities that pursue and achieve SEP certification as part of their corporate commitment as a DOE Better Plants Partner. When the facility is SEP certified, DOE will provide national recognition, including media outreach and website presence, and will promote a facility’s SEP achievements to its corporate office.
