10. Air Force Bloggers Roundtable: Air Force set to launch first X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle. In April 2010, Mr. Gary Payton, Air Force Deputy Under Secretary for Space Programs, and Lt. Col. Erik Bowman, 45th Launch Support Squadron commander, Patrick AFB, Fla. hosted a media teleconference on the first launch of the X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle. The X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle provided a flexible space test platform to conduct various experiments and allow satellite sensors, subsystems, components and associated technology to be efficiently transported to and from the space environment. The X-37B is the first vehicle since NASA’s Shuttle Orbiter with the ability to return experiments to Earth for further inspection and analysis. Read the fact sheet.

8. The Power of Information. In May 2010, U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Simeon Trombitas, serving, at the time, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, as the commander of Joint Task Force-Haiti, and commander of United States Army South in San Antonio, Texas, provided DoDLive.mil a blog post about the “the Power of Information” and its impact in the first hours after the earthquake in Haiti.
The power of the information age became very evident in the first hours after the earthquake in Haiti. Within minutes, the entire world was able to see images and stories of the devastation that hit Haiti on Jan. 12. As a result of this timely information, organizations around the world converged in Haiti to provide any amount of assistance they could offer as part of the international humanitarian relief effort. 7. Dangerous Jobs: Airman Discusses “the Greatest Job in the Military.” In May 2010, U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Neil Jones, the Flight Chief of the 39 Civil Engineer Explosive Ordnance Disposal Flight, based at Incirlik Air Base in Turkey, provided DoDLive.mil a blog post about his job in the military.
In his post he reflected on his experience in explosive ordnance disposal field for the past 15 years. Additionally, he reflected on advice from his father who told him to try to find a job that he loved, and it would never feel like work. Read the blog post. |

6. ‘Twas a Night in December. In December 2010, Defense Media Activity’s Emerging Media Directorate launched a special video project. Servicemembers from more than 40 commands, based around the world, combined their creative talents and contributed countless hours of work to help us pull this project off. The web video, ‘Twas a Night in December, featured country music artist Toby Keith and members of the United States military. 3. DoD Childcare Fees will Soon Rise. In July 2010, the Department of Defense announced the school year 2010/2011 child care fee policy. The new fee policy was implemented in the fall of 2010, which would help to pay for childcare services, including staff for child development centers and school-age care programs. The policy, a change in the income and fee ranges, was designed to have as little impact as possible on families. The department broadened child care fee ranges, raised the income cap on each fee range, and established the top range at $125,001 a year and above to adjust for higher salaries in the military and to better represent different income groups.
