IDEM OAQ's Air Toxics Program
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management's (IDEM) Office of Air Quality (OAQ) is dedicated to ensuring that all Hoosiers breathe the healthiest air possible while still maintaining Indiana’s economic competitiveness. The bulk of effort is focused on what the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) has designated as the criteria pollutants (carbon monoxide, lead, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, ozone). However air toxics are also an important, if less easily understood, aspect of air quality.
To understand possible problems with air toxics and make sure that we are meeting our goals, IDEM maintains one of the most extensive air toxics monitoring networks in the nation. In addition to this, we have an in-house laboratory capable of analyzing an array of air toxics as well as criteria pollutants. We also have air modeling specialists, risk analysts, and Hazardous Air Pollutant (HAP) emissions inventory specialists to help ensure that we have as complete a picture as possible of Indiana’s air quality.
In addition to regular air monitoring and analysis, OAQ has also performed several local- and community-scale air toxics studies in Indianapolis and around the state. These studies combine monitoring and modeling to help get the most complete picture possible of air quality in areas that have been identified as having potential problems.
