NREL's emissions and fuel economy testing and analysis projects help address greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions by advancing the development of new fuels and engines that deliver both high efficiency and reduced emissions.

Emissions that result in pollution from engines are strictly regulated. Industry partners rely on the laboratory's expertise to advance low-carbon fuels and high-efficiency engine technology while maintaining operations in compliance with emissions regulations. NREL evaluates engines and complete vehicle systems, including emission control equipment, over a range of conditions.

NREL's emissions and fuel economy studies include:

  • Analyzing how technologies and fuels developed in the lab perform under real-world conditions
  • Determining how fuel chemistry relates to vehicle emissions and fuel economy
  • Testing the effect of alternative fuels and fuel blends on emission control equipment.

Results from NREL's engine-based emissions and fuel economy studies, conducted primarily at the ReFUEL Laboratory, feed back into the lab's combustion, fuel chemistry, and co-optimization of fuels and engines research activities.
