Pregunta de la Semana: ¿Qué quisiera que preguntáramos en la pregunta de la semana?

Hemos estado planteando la Pregunta de la Semana ya hace más de dos años. Hemos presentado más de 100 preguntas y hemos recibido miles de respuestas sobre una amplia variedd de temas desde por qué va al trabajo en bicicleta (o no) o lo que la protección ambiental significa para usted Y recientemente, usted compartió con nosotros cómo acciones tomadas han mejorado su vida.

Después de esta semana, tomaremos un breve receso para evaluar dónde estábamos y hacia dónde nos encaminaremos con esta sección. Vamos a planificar varios meses de preguntas e identificar maneras para regresar con respuestas colectivas. Vamos a repasar las preguntas y ver cuáles generan el mayor número de respuestas para ver qué modelos surgen.

Algunos aspectos de la vida moderna pueden afectar la salud y el medio ambiente. El término justica ambiental quiere decir que estos efectos se deben compartir de un forma justa y que todos debemos de tener la oportunidad de participar en la toma de decisiones sobre problemas ambientales independientemente de la raza, color, nacionalidad o nivel económico. Algunos ejemplos incluyen:

  • Muchas áreas urbanas continúan teniendo sistemas de alcantarillados que no están diseñados para procesar escorrentías después de una tormenta. Esto ocasiona que aguas residuales desemboquen en ríos y otras corrientes de agua.
  • Los agricultores, 90% de los cuales son personas de color, pueden enfrentar serios riegos a la salud a causa de los pesticidas.
  • Personas de bajos recursos económicos, y a menudo poblaciones de otras culturas, están más inclinadas que otros grupos a vivir cerca de basureros, incineradores, y instalaciones de tratamiento de desperdicios peligrosos.

Como el Día del Planeta Tierra se avecina, ahora es un buen momento para reflexionar sobre las maravillas y placeres que la Madre Tierra nos brinda: majestuosas cordilleras de montañas, playas, precipicios a la orilla del mar, y parques en la ciudad que brindan un refugio verde en la vida urbana. Realmente hay “algo para todo el mundo” o se podría decir “un lugar para todo el mundo”. Díganos cuál es su lugar favorito en la tierra o algún lugar que quisiera experimentar durante su vida y por qué.

La Semana de Prevención de Envenenamientos es del 14 al 20 de marzo. En los hogares con niños menores de cinco años, cerca del cincuenta por ciento conservan al menos un producto pesticida dentro del alcance de un niño. Asimismo, cerca del 75 por ciento de los hogares sin niños menores de cinco años conservan los productos pesticidas en gabinetes abiertos al alcance de los niños. Para ayudar a proteger a los niños de los peligros, instale cierres especiales de seguridad y colóque los productos pesticidas y sustancias químicas caseras bajo llave fuera del alcance de los niños–preferiblemente en un gabinete alto. Haga una inspección de todas las habitaciones en su hogar para asegurarse de que todos los productos para ratas, ratones, cucarachas y cualquier otra cosa como sustancias químicas dañinas como blanqueadores y otros productos de limpieza, por ejemplo, estén almacenados de manera segura. ¡Selecciones, opciones, elecciones! Las hacemos todos los días. A veces sopesamos nuestras opciones y hacemos sacrificios antes de hacer nuestra selección. Quizás usted puede escoger utilizar botellas reutilizables de agua hoy en lugar de optar por una botella de agua desechable. Muchas veces decidimos que el trueque no vale la pena del esfuerzo. Todos tomamos parte en la protección de la salud humana y el cuidado de nuestro medio ambiente. Sea algo grande como organizar un proyecto de reciclaje comunitario o hacer algo a menor escala como recoger un pedazo de basura que otra persona dejara caer, nuestros esfuerzos combinados pueden hacer una diferencia. Hay cosas son mucho más eficientes del punto de vista energético que en el pasado, cosas como vehículos, bombillas, y ahora muchos practicamos las tres R’s como reducir, reciclar y reutilizar. Sin embargo, ahora tenemos muchos más cosas, más vehículos, más tecnología, mayor cantidad de todo…Para empezar esto parecía una pregunta sencilla, pero piense por un minuto y comparta con nosotros sus ideas.
