Through a partnership with the Fairbanks Soil & Water Conservation District, 5 students who participated in the 2011 Youth for Habitat program returned in 2012 to complete an independent habitat restoration project.

These students took on all aspects of designing and constructing a rain garden-a shallow, planted depression designed to collect and filter storm water run-off to improve water quality. Tasks involved with this project included measuring the site and testing the soil to determine garden size, sending donation requests to vendors, coordinating with the Department of Transportation for excavation permits, designing the garden, choosing suitable plants, and writing interpretive signs. These 5 students also supervised a group of younger students in the construction and planting of the garden.

The result of this project is improved water quality for our community, a beautiful new garden next to the community Farmer’s Market, increased awareness of local water quality issues, and 5 young people who have developed confidence in their ability to make a difference in their community.
