Rather than have a birding festival on International Migratory Bird Day, Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge had a birding festival April 28 for birders led by birders. As a result, this event was very successful. Habitat conditions were perfect in the uplands and the wetlands. There were a large number of wetlands with shallow water and mudflats for a diversity of birds. Kansas University professor and renowned ornithologist, Dr. Mark Robbins, led two tours while Refuge biologist Darren Welchert led a group of Missouri Master Naturalists.

A kids hayride was led by volunteer and Friends of Squaw Creek board director Christine Kline in the afternoon. Approximately 50 individuals took advantage of the event despite the marginal weather.
