Fish and Wildlife Service Mapping and Geospatial Services

National Wildlife Refuge and Hatchery Boundaries

These datasets depict the USFWS approved acquisition boundaries and USFWS managed lands, including all National Wildlife Refuge and National Fish Hatchery boundaries.

The intended application of these data layers is as a cadastral framework for use with other data layers in GIS and mapping applications. A cadastral map is a map that shows the boundaries and ownership of land parcels. In this instance, the data layers depict U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service managed lands. Some cadastral maps show additional details, such as survey district names, unique identifying numbers for parcels, certificate of title numbers, positions of existing structures, section or lot numbers and their respective areas, adjoining and adjacent street names, selected boundary dimensions and references to prior maps.

This data is not intended to be used as a land survey or representation of land for conveyance or tax purposes. The primary source for this information is the USFWS Realty program. This information is updated annually. The most recent update was in May 2013.

  • Critical Habitat Portal

A Land Conservation Plan (LCP) is developed to determine whether or not high quality fish and wildlife habitat in a geographic study area should be conserved as part of the National Wildlife Refuge System. An LCP must be completed to expand an existing refuge's boundary or to establish a new refuge.

  • Geospatial Fisheries Information Network (GeoFIN)

A Comprehensive Conservation Plan (CCP) provides management direction for a refuge for 15 years. With input for the public, the Service forms a vision of a refuge's desired conditions and the actions needed to achieve it. A refuge's vision may include improved habitat conditions and expanded public use programs that are compatible with resource conservation.
