WASHINGTON - Assistant Secretary Patricia Hoffman will join Congressmen Donald M. Payne, Jr. (NJ-10) and Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-6) and Public Service Energy & Gas (PSEG) Company President & CEO Ralph LaRossa in a press conference on the need to upgrade our power systems, invest in smart grid technologies, and make our electric grid more resilient.
Between 2003 and 2012, weather-related outages are estimated to have cost the U.S. economy on average between $18 billion and $33 billion annually. Hurricane Sandy demonstrated the importance of strengthening systems to protect against a major storm. Hurricane Sandy paralyzed the New Jersey/New York region for weeks, and estimates of total economic damage from the storm in the United States exceed $65 billion. Much of the damage can be linked to the failure of critical water, power and transportation systems with electric power reliability as a common thread across these systems.
