Stretch Your IT Training Dollars with SPAWAR SCC Technology Training
By Janet Carter - July-September 2001
We all know that Information Technology (IT) training budgets are tight. Everyone wants the best possible training at the best possible price so it makes sense to stretch your training dollars as far as you can with the best training you can find. But how do you do it? Computer Based Training (CBTs) at your workstation? Reference and "how to" books? Well, that's a start, but that doesn't work for everyone. What about Instructor Led Training (ILT)? Now you're talking.

Instructor-led Training (ILT)

ILT has been around for a long time. Schools and academic institutions use ILT as their primary method of teaching--we're all accustomed to classroom training as our primary method of learning. It takes a combination of hearing the information, seeing how it's done and doing it for your self to reinforce concepts and procedures. That's where SPAWAR SCC Technology Training comes into play. We offer the right ILT IT training courses are offered at the right time, at the right place and at a great price. Custom courses are readily available at our state-of-the-art training center in the downtown area of Norfolk, Virginia, or on-site at your location. You're sure to find the best price for the highest quality training. Here's what's offered.

The Right Stuff

At SPAWAR SCC Technology Training, we offer a full range of courses and services to meet the demands of learning the newest technology in the IT industry today, especially in the areas of network system administration and certification. Our classes are designed to teach students how technology can enhance job performance. In addition, Microsoft A+ and Network+ courses map to Microsoft certification exams. All of our instructors who teach the Microsoft advanced courses are Microsoft Certified Systems Engineers (MCSE). Our staff also includes A+ and Network+ Certified Professionals, who teach A+ and Network+ courses. A Unix track introduction track is available, in addition to Unix system administration and shell programming. If your goals are to improve job productivity, and prepare for certification -- we can assist you in meeting both of these objectives.

The Right Place at the Right Time

We've all heard that, "Timing is everything." Everyone strives to be at the right place at the right time to grab the best opportunity. As for being at the right place, our training center is located in the beautiful downtown area of Norfolk, Virginia, which is conveniently located to all military bases in the Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Hampton, Virginia vicinity. The training center is located within easy walking distance of hotels, great restaurants, shopping an sites of interest. We have four state-of-the-art classrooms that will each accommodate 12-16 students. Each student works on their own workstation during the hands-on classroom instruction. The instructor teaches with a projection system to allow students to see step-by-step what the instructor is demonstrating. Then the students repeat the technique at their workstations. Workbooks are also included in the tuition and serve as a handy reference tool. All students receive a certificate of course completion.

In order to give our instructors all the resources they need to share knowledge in the classroom, we secured status as a Microsoft Certified Partner. As a Microsoft Certified Partner, we are now able to acquire Microsoft Official Curriculum (MOC). This is the same courseware used in Microsoft Certified Technical Education Centers (CTECs).

If you are not able to attend one of the regularly scheduled classes in our Norfolk, Virginia center, we'll come to you. If you have a classroom facility with workstations that meet the criteria for the course, you won't have to leave your site. We travel anywhere in the world.

The regular schedule offers sessions based on a quarterly calendar. If you have a special need for training in a particular timeframe, we can make arrangements for group training sessions outside the regular course schedule. If you don't see the exact course you need, we can customize any of our existing courses to fit your requirements.

We're ready to teach Microsoft courses: 2028, 2153, and 2154 utilizing the MOC. Courses 2152, 2153 and 2154 map to Microsoft exam requirements. Check our Web site for course schedules and outlines. You'll also want to look at the courses for Unix, Microsoft office, Microsoft FrontPage, Access Development, Microsoft Exchange Server and TCP/IP, as well. Better hurry -- classes fill up quickly, especially in the summer months.

End-user training, network administration training and other courses are coordinated with USAREUR. We serve over 11 classroom sites in Germany, Italy and surrounding areas.

Customer Service Success

Since 1982, the Norfolk Training Center has offered a variety of training solutions as IT has dramatically evolved. We have had the privilege of providing custom training solutions for many customers from the Department of Defense (DoD) and other federal agencies. An example of this is the custom training program, we designed to support U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) personnel transition to a new system -- the Standard Workstation III (SWIII). We were chosen by the USCG Maintenance and Logistics Command Atlantic (MLCA) to provide custom solutions for over 1200 personnel in Norfolk and Portsmouth, Virginia.

We duplicated the SWIII screen image in our classrooms to give students the exact feel of what their new system would look like and how its configured. While the students were in the classroom receiving training, system engineers were at their offices installing new workstations.

We also performed this training for USCG personnel in Elizabeth City, North Carolina; Boston, Massachusetts; Juneau, Alaska; Kodiak, Alaska; New Orleans, Louisiana; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Cleveland, Ohio; and Yorktown, Virginia.

As part of the USCG training package, we offered special sessions for senior executives and officers to accommodate individual technical requirements and scheduling needs. Other support services we provided were: quota control, student registration, classroom setup and configuration, custom courseware design and project leadership.

In addition to the support we provide to the USAREUR and the USCG, we've been honored to serve these other fine organizations: Joint Task Force; Naval Station Roosevelt Roads; Commander Second Fleet; Defense Automated Printing Service; Defense Commissary Agency; Naval Security Group Activity Sugar Grove, West Virginia; AEGIS Training and Readiness Center, Commander Operational Test and Evaluation Force; USS Nimitz (CVN-68; Naval Facilities Engineering Command; US Fish and Wildlife Services, and many more.
