Information Dominance Corps Training Update
By Office of the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Information Dominance (N2/N6) - August 12, 2014
Revisions to Information Dominance training are designed to further integrate the Information Dominance Corps (IDC) and enhance Navy warfighting. Leaders from across the IDC are constructing a robust professional development continuum to complement community-specific training already in place for enlisted, officer and civilian personnel. Initiatives include resourcing the Information Dominance Basic Course (IDBC) – an IDC officer accession course – and transitioning the Information Dominance Mid-Career Course (IDMCC) from a seminar to more of a knowledge and skill-based class. To ensure alignment with the CNO’s Navy Leader Development Strategy, both the IDBC and the IDMCC will include significant emphasis on developing leadership competencies.

Information Dominance Basic Course (officer)
Led by the Center for Information Dominance (CID), subject matter experts from across the IDC have joined to create the IDBC, a new course that will indoctrinate and familiarize students with the foundational concepts and attributes of Information Dominance. The goal is to deepen understanding of the core Information Dominance sub-disciplines as well as the integration and application of related capabilities necessary to achieve decision superiority across the Navy. CID is scheduled to pilot the course in March 2015 and begin regular delivery in the first quarter of FY16.

Information Dominance Mid-Career Course (enlisted/officer/civilian)
The IDMCC was established in February 2011 as a familiarization seminar for mid-career IDC personnel. A Job Duty Task Analysis held July 14-18 in Suffolk, Virginia, identified the tasks required to succeed in mid-grade milestone assignments across the IDC. Over the next year and a half, CID will develop a new IDMCC curriculum focused primarily on supporting IDC professionals in their milestone assignments.

The Way-Ahead
The IDC has discontinued the Information Dominance Senior Leader Symposium (IDSLS). In its place, we will use existing Navy-wide senior professional development courses such as the Navy Senior Leader Seminar (NSLS) (open to O5/O6 officers and GS-15 civilians), the Strategic Planning Effects, Assessments, and Risks (SPEAR) (for commanders and their executive teams), or the Strategic Communication Workshops (SCW) (for teams of 3-5 organizational members led by a Flag Officer, SES or O6).

  • NSLS Quotas: Fleet Cyber Command (FCC) manages the 28 annually allocated IDC quotas for NSLS. The FCC point of contact for quotas is Mr. Karl Terrell (Karlton.terrell@navy.mil, 443-634-4569; DSN 685).
  • SPEAR and SCW Quotas: Commands wishing to send a team of students (3-5) to either the SPEAR or SCW course should contact Mr. Tyller Williamson (nedpregistrar@nps.edu, 831-656-3850).
  • OPNAV N2/N6 IDC Training POC: Mr. Mike Saunders ( michael.saunders@navy.mil, 703-604-6292).

The IDC will utilize Navy senior officer training (NSLS, SPEAR, and SCW) vice its own IDC specific training (IDSLS).

The IDMCC, NSLS, SPEAR, and SCW are open to active duty, reservists, and IDC civilian personnel.
