Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group Returns Home — More than 6,000 Sailors from Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 10 are scheduled to arrive at their homeports Dec. 30 after completing a highly successful seven-month deployment. The aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) (Ike), guided-missile cruiser USS San Jacinto (CG 56) and guided-missile destroyers USS Mason (DDG 87) and USS Nitze (DDG 94) are returning to Naval Station (NS) Norfolk. USS Roosevelt (DDG 80) is returning to its homeport of NS Mayport, Florida.
Navy Combat Art: Capturing What the Camera Cannot — In a historic building at the Washington Navy Yard that once served as, among other things, a munition cartridge-case shop, you will find an art studio through which classical music and bright light reverberate. GW Serves up Christmas Meal — T'was the night before Christmas, and all through the ship, culinary specialists were busy cooking dish after dish. For two weeks, they planned a feast of typical holiday fare such as, turkey, ham, green bean casserole and desserts so Sailors on duty could enjoy a holiday feast on Christmas Day. Sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) invited their families aboard to partake in the Christmas meal, Dec. 25.
Navy Accepts Delivery of Future USS Gabrielle Giffords (LCS 10) — The Navy accepted delivery of the future USS Gabrielle Giffords (LCS 10) during a ceremony, Dec. 23. Gabrielle Giffords is the ninth littoral combat ship (LCS) to be delivered to the Navy and the fifth of the Independence variant to join the fleet. The Independence variant is noted for its unique trimaran hull, ability to operate at high speeds and large flight deck size.
Navy Releases History of its Roles in Defense Reform — The Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) released on its website an internally prepared paper summarizing defense reform and changes in the Navy's roles and authorities throughout its history, officials announced Dec. 22, 2016. Written by NHHC historians Justin L. C. Eldridge, Ryan Peeks, Ph.D., and Greg Bereiter, Ph.D., the 20-page paper, and accompanying 60-page chronology, entitled Navy and Defense Reform: A Short History and Reference Chronology offers insight into how reform has affected the service and how its leaders have managed those changes.
USS Bonhomme Richard Sailors Shares Holiday Joy with Japanese Kindergarteners — Sailors stationed aboard amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) visited children of Emukae Kindergarten as part of a community relations (COMREL) visit to Sasebo, Japan, Dec. 21. During the visit, Sailors answered questions about the Navy, played Santa's helpers, sang Christmas carols and participated in a gift exchange. The children also surprised the Sailors with dance performances, and gifted them with hand-made Christmas cards and garlands.
USS Bonhomme Richard Sailors visit Omura Children's Home — Sailors assigned to amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) delivered presents to the children living at the Omura Children's Home during an Angel Tree community relation (COMREL) event. The Angel Tree program's purpose is to give gifts to less fortunate children in the community who might not have the same opportunities during the holiday season as others. More than 30 Sailors volunteered to deliver 50 gifts donated by their fellow shipmates.
Naval War College conducts cutting-edge educational simulation — A new educational simulation took place within U.S. Naval War College's (NWC) National Security Affairs (NSA) department, Dec. 16, that is placing the school at the vanguard of experiential learning according to the department chair. The simulation, "Levels of Analysis 2016 Simulation," leveraged the talents of NSA department faculty with the design and development expertise of the NWC's Wargaming department.
Navy Develops and Tests Maritime Autonomy in a Box — Scientists and engineers at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division have developed a way to change unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) mission information as easily as updating an app on your cell phone. NSWC PCD Autonomous Systems Engineers, Drs. Matthew Bays and Drew Lucas, refer to the system as "Autonomy in a Box."
2016 Navy Community Service Environmental Stewardship Flagship Award Winners Announced — Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Fleet Readiness and Logistics (N4) Vice Adm. Philip H. Cullom announced the winners and honorable mentions in the 2016 Navy Community Service Environmental Stewardship Flagship Awards, Dec. 20. The awards program highlights commands and ships that exhibit strong commitment to environmental stewardship via volunteer service projects.
Navy Scientist Selected as National Academy of Inventors Fellow — Dr. Stuart H. Rubin, a scientist at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific (SSC Pacific) who significantly advanced the fields of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and deep learning, has been selected as a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI). Rubin has 35 patents, with more than two dozen pending, and has authored or co-authored 300 refereed papers and four books.
Supply Corps Officer Sets World Running Record — Lt. Cmdr. Gina Slaby, a naval officer serving with NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center Puget Sound at Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton, set a new world record for the 100 mile run at the 2016 Desert Solstice Track Invitational in Phoenix, Dec. 10. Slaby is currently stationed in Bremerton, Washington. where she serves as the head of the NAVSUP FLC Puget Sound operations department. Slaby set a new world record for the 100 mile run, coming in at 13 hours, 45 minutes, and 49 seconds, breaking the previous record set in 1991 by Ann Trason in Flushing, New York.
Salty Dogs On The Sea — As you walk down the ramp from the hangar bay of the amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5), and go beyond the various types of armored reconnaissance vehicles you will find two small kennels. These kennels house Bella, a 5-year-old Belgian Malinois, a combat tracking dog, and Cezar II, a 3-year-old German Sheppard, a patrol explosive detection dog.
