The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is dedicated to protecting human health and the environment from residual hazards and to meeting our commitment to the environment, our stakeholders, and our workers, past and present.

In December 2003, DOE established the Office of Legacy Management (LM) to ensure the future protection of human health and the environment at sites across the country. The Public and Intergovernmental Engagement Team supports LM in development and implementation of national public/intergovernmental activities, management of website content, and development and distribution of documents.

LM’s responsibilities include developing and executing activities that promote awareness among the general public and within internal and external organizations that are affected by or have interest in LM.

LM provides public outreach, as well as efforts to communicate with stakeholders who are interested in DOE and LM programs, products, and services. LM upholds these responsibilities, in part, by acquiring input from individuals, groups, host communities, and other public and private sector entities that are affected by DOE’s activities and decisions.
