Notes: Fuel use is measured in gasoline-gallon equivalents (GGEs), representing a quantity of fuel with the same energy content as a gallon of gasoline.
This chart shows average fuel economy of major vehicle categories in the United States. Refuse trucks and transit buses have relatively low fuel economy since they are heavy and drive stop-and-go drivecycles. Class 8 trucks, which carry even heavier loads yet drive more consistent drivecycles, also have relatively low fuel economy. For comparison, see Average Per-Passenger Fuel Economy and Average Annual Fuel Use of Major Vehicle Categories.
