Suggestions for Audits, Evaluations and Pending Projects

As part of our efforts to be the best in public service and oversight for a better environment tomorrow, we welcome suggestions for audits and evaluations as well as any input relating to our notification memo topics. Audits and evaluations provide accountability and transparency for government programs. They provide objective analysis and information for agency decision makers.

We conduct audits and evaluations of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) activities, contracts, grants and programs that examine ways in which EPA management can improve program performance and operations, reduce costs, and improve public accountability. We also serve as the Inspector General for the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board. Your suggestions will be considered as the Office of Inspector General considers new projects.

To make suggestions for audits or evaluations, please contact us via one of the following methods:

FOIA Requests

What are the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and the Privacy Act (PA)?

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) provides that any person has a right to obtain access to Federal agency records, except to the extent that such records are protected from public disclosure by one of nine exemptions. The Privacy Act (PA) provides access to one of ten nondisclosure documents except for those protected by the exemptions. The PA protects from disclosure all personal identifiable records in the Government’s possession, with certain exceptions established by statute.

FOIA FAQs

Who can file a FOIA or PA request?

Anyone can file a FOIA request. Any citizen or lawfully-admitted alien can file a PA request. Either type of request must be made in writing or submitted in an electronic format. The EPA OIG does not accept requests by phone.

How long does it take to get a response under FOIA?

Once an agency receives a FOIA request, the agency has 20 working days to make a decision on the request.

How can you file a FOIA and PA request with the EPA?

1. FOIAonline (Preferred / Fastest Method)

FOIAonline allows you to electronically submit FOIA requests, modify requests, communicate with the EPA about the status of a request, search previously submitted requests, view responsive documents that are cleared for release, access a dashboard with information about the status of a request, and file an appeal.

Access FOIAonline at https://foiaonline.regulations.gov/foia/action/public/home

2. Postal Mail / Fax

FOIA and PA requests for EPA OIG records can be sent directly to the EPA OIG FOIA Officer by mailing a request to:

FOIA Officer
EPA OIG
1200 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Mail Code 2411T
Washington, DC 20460-0001
Fax: (202) 566-0870

3. Email

Requests can also be submitted directly to the EPA OIG by emailing a request to OIG_FOIA@epa.gov.

Provide a description of the records you are seeking in a way that will permit the OIG to identify and locate them. If you are seeking records relating to a facility, site, or regulated entity, please include the complete name and address of each property you are inquiring about.

Reading Room - Guide to Reference Materials FOIA requires that agencies have a "reading room" to inspect publicly available documents. The reports webpage is available to serve this purpose, here on our public website. FOIAonline provides search functionality for EPA OIG FOIA responsive documents that do not contain first-party protected information.
