We developed guidance to help U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) biologists assess the impacts of wind energy projects on Indiana bats.

We are sharing this guidance with  interested parties as they may find the guidance helpful in understanding the underlying rationale for our impact analyses and for guiding project development to avoid and minimize impacts to Indiana bats.

Although we encourage project proponents to use the guidance, it is not a substitute for coordination with the Service. We strongly encourage early contact with the appropriate Ecological Services Field Office for all wind energy projects.

As information regarding impacts to bats from wind energy projects is rapidly evolving, these guidelines will be updated frequently.  To ensure you have the most recent version, please visit this website regularly.  All major edits and additions are listed by date below.

If you have questions, concerns or supplemental information to provide, please contact Forest Clark at Forest_Clark@fws.gov.

Guidance Updates

11/2/2011 – Question 33 was edited to clarify the conditions that must be met in order for us to conclude exposure is unlikely during the summer period.
