Staying Informed and Involved

The Air Force has periodically conducted community involvement activities related to the Base cleanup program such as public notices and information meetings. The Air Force is actively trying to establish a Technical Review Committees (TRC) to provide  opportunities for the Air Force to facilitate citizen involvement in cleanup decisions. Are there risks at the site now?

Historical activities at Tyndall Air Force Base resulted in releases of contaminants to the environment. Site investigations found contamination in groundwater, sediments, soils and surface water that could potentially harm people and environmental resources in the area.  Known contaminants at this time are lead and lead pellets in soil at multiple former range sites (including Tyndall Elementary School), chlorinated solvents in groundwater at multiple sites in the flightline and hangar area of the Air Force Base, DDT and breakdown products in sediment at Shoal Point Bayou, and various metals in soils at former landfill sites in multiple locations across the Air Force Base.

Sampling and Monitoring Information

The U.S. Air Force has hired multiple contractors to conduct sampling and monitoring at Tyndall AFB.  All sampling and monitoring at the operable units covered under the FFA are working under work plans and sampling and analysis plans reveiwed and approved by EPA and FDEP, as required by the FFA.

Community Resources

The Tyndall Air Force Base is currently in use. There is an active military facility located on site. Tyndall is currently part of the Air Education and Training Command, testing air defense systems and tactics and training air defense crews.
