September 2007 - Springfield Utility Board (SUB), a municipal utility serving about 30,000 customers in Oregon, plans to offer a green power program starting in October. Under the new program, consumers will have the option of purchasing renewable energy in 100 kWh increments for $1 each month, or a cost of 1¢/kWh above standard electricity rates. To supply the program, SUB will purchase renewable energy certificates (RECs) from certified suppliers. Customers can buy an unlimited number of 100-kWh blocks. The average residential SUB customer uses about 1,300 kWh each month.
SUB is offering the program to comply with a new state law (SB 838) that requires all utilities to offer a green power product.
