June 2006 - Green Power EMC, a partnership of 28 Georgia electric membership cooperatives serving more than three million Georgia homes, businesses, factories and farms, has launched a Sun Power for Schools program, under which participating EMCs partner with a middle school or high school to install a 1-kW solar photovoltaic (PV) system and provide on-line data monitoring in the classroom. Five systems have been installed to date with 10 additional schools to receive systems by the end of the year.
Under the Green Power EMC program, customers can make voluntary purchases of renewable energy in 150-kWh monthly blocks for $3 to $5, depending upon the participating cooperative, with the power supplied from two landfill generating plants and a low-impact hydroelectric facility.

March 2006 - Green Power EMC, a partnership of 28 electric membership corporations (EMCs) in Georgia, announced plans to add a poultry litter gasification facility to the resource mix of its green pricing program. The partnership has entered into a 15-year power purchase agreement with Earth Resources Inc. for the output of the 20-MW facility to be located about 70 miles northeast of Atlanta. Construction will begin in May with plant operation expected in summer 2007.

August 2005 - Eleven cooperatives have joined the Green Power EMC program, thus expanding the green power option to an additional 200,000 retail customers. A total of 28 Georgia cooperatives with 1.2 million eligible retail customers now participate in the program under which customers can make voluntary purchases of renewable energy in 150-kWh monthly blocks for $3 to $5, depending upon the participating cooperative. Since its creation in 2001, Green Power EMC has generated more than 50 million kWh of electricity from two landfill gas projects. The program recently added a low-impact hydropower project in Athens, Georgia.

July 2005 - Georgia Electric Membership Corporation is exploring new supplies for its Green Power EMC program. Earlier this year, the cooperative association added a 2.3-MW hydropower project at Tallassee Shoals in Athens, which is certified by the Low Impact Hydropower Institute. Green Power EMC is also collecting wind resource data at the site of a pumped storage hydro project in Floyd County with the intent of adding wind energy to its green power resource mix in the future.
Formed in 2001, Green Power EMC is a joint effort by 17 of the state's electric cooperatives to generate energy from renewable resources. Under the program, participating customers can purchase renewable energy in 100-kWh monthly increments for an additional $3 to $5, or a rate premium of 3¢/kWh to 5¢/kWh, depending upon the participating EMC. A portion of the revenues collected from green power subscribers goes toward research and development.

Power for the program is supplied from three in-state landfill gas projects with a combined capacity of 9 MW. The first of the three projects began generating electricity in early October. A portion of the program revenues will be placed into a fund that will be used to develop additional renewable energy resources, such as wind, solar, and low-impact hydro.

May 2002 - Georgia Governor Roy Barnes declared April 22 Green Power Day as 16 electric cooperatives began selling green power to their member customers. The green power will be offered to customers in 150-kWh blocks with the pricing to be determined separately by each cooperative based on generating expenses and administrative costs. The power will be supplied by Green Power EMC from three new landfill methane projects, totaling 8 MW of capacity, which will become operational later this year. Additional green power resources will be added at a later date.
