Phishing Is As Quick As Clicking One Click Too Many

There are all sorts of impersonators working to obtain our personal information.  Phishing is a malicious attempt to collect personal and/or financial information for illegal purposes by masquerading as an email from a trustworthy entity.

Phishing has proven to be an effective method of attack in that its success is dependent on the awareness of the user. Fraudsters implement phishing scams by sending email messages appearing to be from legitimate, credible sources, tricking users into clicking on a malicious link or opening an attachment.  By clicking on the link or opening the attachment, this allows criminals the opportunity to access and compromise your system--as quick as clicking one click too many, your entire identity and working dynamics can be stripped away.

The Department of Energy (DOE) is committed to educating and increasing awareness by exposing cyber attackers and their malicious intentions.   As our common and shared responsibility, we must keep cyber awareness in the forefront of our minds and encourage users to Stop.Think.Connect.

Be cautious of emails coming from unrecognized senders.  Do not reply to an email, text, or pop-up message requesting personal or financial information.  Don’t click on links, open attachments, or download files within emails from unknown senders; even if the message appears to be from a credible financial institution.  Remember, financial institutions DO NOT ask for sensitive information via email, text or other unsecure channels.

It is our responsibility to stay a step ahead of the attackers.  Remain aware of the malicious attacks and refrain from taking the bait.  Don’t be fooled!
