Theme Description:
This collection "Ocean Scale Interactions" is dedicated as a tribute to our dear friend and colleague Bach-Lien Hua. It is derived from the international symposium organized at Ifremer Brest (France) in June of 2014 (http://www.ocean-scale-interactions.org/). Lien extensively contributed to this field on Ocean Scale Interactions, in particular on the Equatorial Dynamics and Ocean Layering. But her main contributions have been on Mesoscale and Submesoscale Oceanic Turbulence, including its related effect on Stirring and Mixing mechanisms and the impact of this turbulence on the larger oceanic scales. The symposium addressed these scientific topics through several sessions. Each session focused on the state of art, the challenges ahead, the next scientific questions and the methods to address them. One such method, that Lien advocated and that may inspire young scientists, is the analysis of very high resolution data - obtained from in-situ measurements and high performance computers - using a geophysical fluid dynamics approach.
Papers in this collection span key ideas discussed at the symposium that may suggest new research work in this topic.
