Spokane County, WA, founded in 1879 and named after the Spokane tribe, is committed to taking action to reduce natural resource consumption in its buildings portfolio. The County recognizes that sustainable practices are critical to future economic development and long-term financial stability, and recognizes that it has a responsibility to be an environmental steward and leader in promoting sustainable practices to reduce energy consumption, water use and waste. Spokane County has retrofitted over 450,000 square feet of building space through Energy Saving Performance Contracts (ESPC), with an additional 485,000 square feet of building space currently being retrofit with energy, water and operational saving measures.
As a Better Building Challenge Partner, Spokane County will continue to implement a comprehensive strategic plan for resource conservation that was developed through a U.S. DOE Energy Efficiency Block Grant (EECBG). The two-pronged plan includes a community-based partnership with Avista Utilities to provide energy audits for residents in unincorporated Spokane County, and also to implement a Resource Conservation Manager Program organization-wide that will leverage utility incentive and additional grants from other sources.
