Hilton Worldwide is a leading global hospitality company, with a portfolio of 12 world-class global brands comprised of more than 4,500 managed, franchised, owned and leased hotels and timeshare properties, with more than 745,000 rooms in 97 countries and territories. Living Sustainably is a business imperative and a cornerstone of Hilton’s Travel with Purpose, the company’s corporate responsibility strategy to create shared value for Hilton Team Members, guests, business partners and communities.

LightStay™, Hilton’s state-of-the-art, in-house corporate responsibility measurement platform, became a brand standard in 2009 and now every one of Hilton’s properties measures its performance and footprint through LightStay™. This global platform enables Hilton to understand how each of its hotels is managing and driving improvements in the areas of energy, water, waste, carbon, community engagement and social investments over time; all factors that significantly impact the economics of its business.

Following a comprehensive upgrade to LightStay™, Hilton’s more than 4,500 properties around the world became ISO 50001 (energy management) certified. This certification complements the company's other global system-wide ISO certifications: ISO 9001 and 14001 for quality and environmental management. Hilton Worldwide is the first global hospitality company to be ISO 50001 certified.

In addition to partnering with DOE through the Better Buildings Challenge, Hilton is now stepping up to pilot DOE’s Superior Energy Performance (SEP) certification in the hospitality industry. Landmark properties that have implemented the program include Washington Hilton (the site of the 2016 Better Buildings Summit).

These efforts have led to Hilton cumulatively reducing energy use by over 14%, carbon output by over 20%, waste output by over 27%, and water use by 14% percent. These savings combine for a total efficiency cumulative savings of over $550 million between 2014 and 2009.
