Secretary Ernest Moniz joins Dr. John P. Holdren, Assistant to the President for Science and Technology, and Representative Henry Waxman for the first Quadrennial Energy Review (QER) public meeting.

Chairmen Rogers and Simpson, Ranking Members Lowey and Kaptur, and Members of the Committee, thank you for the opportunity to appear before you today to discuss the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Budget Request for fiscal year (FY) 2015. This is my first time appearing before this Committee since I joined the Department of Energy last May, and I appreciate the opportunity to discuss how the budget request advances our clean energy, science, nuclear security, and nuclear waste cleanup goals to carry out the President’s priorities.

Well, thank you, Dan (Poneman).

As Dan indicated, we go back a ways and if you look at Secretaries and Deputy Secretaries and Acting Secretaries of the Department of Energy, I’m pretty sure that Dan is the record holder for his tenure at the Department, and I’m especially grateful that he agreed to work together with us, and as he said, have fun, which we are doing.

Well, thank you, Tom [Fanning] and Paul [Bowers], and Buzz [Miller] as well.  It’s really been a great day down here.  And I’ll say more about that, but right off, it’s great to come down from Washington, down here to Georgia, and see real big stuff going on. 

I’ll say a little bit about another loan guarantee-supported project, last week we were out in the Mojave Desert with a huge solar thermal plant: a very, very different technology.  But you look at it and you see energy is big and this is what it takes to supply those services that Tom was just talking about. 

Well, thank you, Myron.  It’s a great pleasure to be here at the press club.  And to note also, I learned that this is President Belkind’s first lunch as president, so I feel honored doubly.  Also (I) want to thank Rod and the Speakers Committee for pulling this event together.  You’ve also been introduced to some of my DOE colleagues here who may pitch in on some of the questions.

Tomorrow, Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz will travel to Ivanpah Dry Lake, California, to dedicate the world’s largest concentrating solar power plant. Secretary Moniz will deliver the keynote address at the dedication event.

Tomorrow, Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz will travel to Austin, Texas, to amplify President Obama’s State of the Union remarks on energy and technology innovation.
