In the Community
The Urban Refuge Program, launched in 2015, is a long-term investment of U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service resources in the Portland-Vancouver Metro Area, directed at amplifying the voices of those tackling the conservation challenges of the 21st Century. The program includes four National Wildlife Refuges, ensuring they are welcoming and relevant places for a growing community. We are also working beyond the refuge boundaries to build relationships with community partners, moving forward together with fresh, courageous, and impactful ideas.

A Refuge For Us All
Our 2nd Annual Youth Waterfowl Hunt, open to youth age 17 and younger, starts this month. The hunt takes place on the Riverboat Unit of the refuge, giving young people a chance to see part of the Refuge usually closed to the public in addition to learning about hunting and conservation in a safe environment.

Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge restores, maintains, and protects healthy native habitats for wildlife and provides present and future generations an opportunity to connect with nature in wild places. This fall, the Service will use prescribed fire as a tool to restore habitats on a 4-acre site. The Service is partnering with local fire management and community agencies to ensure all safety measures are taken. The public is welcome to visit the Refuge on the day of the prescribed fire to see and learn about this important conservation tool.

Northern Pintail
These sleek ducks are one of the first winter migrants to arrive in the wetlands. Look for their long, dark tail feathers as they dabble in the wetlands.
