VISTA Program

VISTA Program

Through annual grant support from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and partner site support, RurAL CAP acts as a Multi Focus Intermediary to partner with Alaska agencies to place Volunteers In Service To America (VISTA) members. VISTA members work to build capacity and expand opportunities to bring low income communities out of poverty.


Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium- Healthy Homes

ANTHC has a healthy homes and respiratory health project that focuses on housing improvements and connecting economically disadvantaged people to health care. The goal of the project is to improve the respiratory health of residents through home-based intervention. Those interventions include the housing authority performing home modifications, and education geared at increasing water usage and improving air quality. The VISTA will focus interpreting air quality and respiratory health data, as well as developing and presenting educational material based on that data. The VISTA will also work with rural community stakeholders to help them collaborate on services that benefit respiratory health for residents. Read more about ANTHC


The Resource Basket

The Resource Basket directly assists rural, tribal communities and youth-serving organizations to support Alaska Native youth be healthy, successful and culturally-connected. This will alleviate poverty by growing the scale and reach of the Resource Basket which will lead to increased efficacy of youth providers in impoverished, rural communities. As a VISTA Member serving with The Resource Basket at RurAL CAP, you will conduct outreach, marketing and develop partnerships for the Center to build its sustainability and to help increase technical assistance requests from rural Alaska. Read more about the Resource Basket


Burchell High School

Burchell High School is an alternative High School in Wasilla, Alaska. Burchell is using the VISTA resource to engage students in: restorative justice; parent education programs; and financial literacy. Burchell is actively engaging a VISTA member to promote post high school success for their students. Read more about Burchell High School


Anchorage Community Land Trust

Anchorage Community Land Trust strives to develop healthy and prosperous communities in Anchorage by acquiring, developing and planning for the land and projects necessary to bring about sustainable neighborhood revitalization and economic development. As a “hybrid” organization, ACLT works both as a land trust and as a community development organization. The goal is to improve the quality of life in the community by addressing issues important to Mountain View residents. This goal of this VISTA project is to alleviate poverty through growing economic opportunities for Mountain View residents through financial literacy education, entrepreneurship, and small business training and increasing local hire of trained, qualified and increasing local hire of trained, qualified community members. Read more about the Community Land Trust


Beans Café

Bean’s Café is engaging a VISTA member to enhance their ability to count un-duplicated clients served and enhance their revenue stream through more engagement and use of data. Through this initiative, Bean’s Café hopes to improve their capacity to feed the hungry and homeless without discrimination by increasing agency capacity to tell the story of their successes. Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium – Rural Energy

ANTHC is engaging a VISTA member in order to launch a community education program with the end goal of reducing the delivered consumer cost of piped water and sewer in rural Alaska. The VISTA member will host community education initiatives, collect user information and analyze data to make recommendations for optimal system installation and homeowner system education.

The Native Village of Port Heiden is recruiting for a VISTA member to serve in Port Heiden, Alaska on the Alaska Peninsula. Maniilaq Association

Maniilaq Association is currently recruiting for a VISTA member to engage community members in a public health initiatives including indoor air quality and a traditional foods initiative. This position is based in Kotzebue, Alaska and serves the Maniilaq Service area that is closely married to the boundaries of the Northwest Arctic Borough.
