A pair of college communities at opposite ends of Western New York -- Amherst and Alfred -- offer the region’s strongest concentrations of jobs in the computer, engineering and science fields.

Click on the View Slideshow button for a rundown of science-related employment in all 53 Western New York cities and towns with populations above 5,000.

These new employment figures come from the five-year version of the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2015 American Community Survey, which was released earlier this month.

Amherst is the regional leader with 4,098 computer, engineering and science (CES) jobs, accounting for 6.8 percent of the town’s workers.

Alfred’s townwide population of 5,119 is a tiny fraction of Amherst’s 124,044. But Alfred’s 142 CES jobs translate to a nearly comparable rate (6.5 percent). The Erie County town of Boston holds third place at 6.3 percent.

The slideshow also provides a gender breakdown for CES employment. Local men hold more than three-quarters of the total positions in Western New York's 53 major cities and towns. They have 19,403 CES jobs in those places, while local women have 6,187.
