PowerSouth Energy Cooperative

September 2006 - PowerSouth Energy Cooperative (formerly Alabama Electric Cooperative), which supplies electricity to 16 distribution cooperatives and 4 municipal utilities serving a total of 385,000 end-use customers in Alabama and Florida, offers the Green Power Choice program to its member utilities. The program allows residential and business customers of participating co-ops to purchase 100-kWh blocks of renewable energy each month for an extra $2 per block, or 2¢/kWh above standard electric rates, although the rate premium may vary by utility. Participating customers must enroll for one year. The program is supplied with renewable energy certificates (RECs) from the 4-MW Springhill Regional Landfill Biomass Project in northwest Florida, which became operational in early 2006. Currently, about half of the AEC member utilities offer the green power option to their customers.
