SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- The Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions (CSADD) chapter aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) is the recipient of the 2015 Bob Feller Act of Valor Award.

The award, named after Major League Baseball (MLB) player, National Baseball Hall of Fame (NBHOF) inductee, and U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Bob Feller, was established in 2013 to recognize one active Major League Baseball player, one chief petty officer and one member of the NBHOF who exhibit the same values, integrity and dedication to service that Feller himself displayed, according to the Bob Feller Act of Valor Award Foundation website.

This year the award also recognized a group of Sailors, 18-25 years old, who have worked together as a team to promote peer-to-peer mentorship and reduce Sailors' destructive decision making and behavior.

"It is an honor to receive this award," said Aviation Boatswain's Mate 3rd class Alexis Clinton, Carl Vinson CSADD vice president. "We don't work hard for just awards or recognition. As junior Sailors we understand the importance of leading by example. There is no greater feeling than knowing what we do, can change someone's life."

Carl Vinson CSADD Sailors were recognized for their superior leadership through volunteer service and selfless commitment to the benefit and success of their fellow shipmates.

"It's important to show the Navy these Sailors are valued all the way up through the chain of command," said Chief Hospital Corpsman Randall Zenonian, Carl Vinson CSADD chapter mentor. "Such recognition is important to let CSADD members around the Navy know that their actions and efforts do not go unnoticed. This award is an outstanding achievement for our chapter, and I am proud of each and every one of our Sailors."

For Command Master Chief Marty Barnholtz, Carl Vinson command master chief, CSADD is an organization held near and dear to his heart, and knowing his Sailors are being recognized for their hard work and devotion to their shipmates is a source of great pride.

"You may notice me wearing my CSADD t-shirt often to various events," said Barnholtz. "This organization means so much to me, because it empowers our junior Sailors to get involved and assist their peers. In my experience, Sailors are always more willing to take advice from someone they can relate to. The fact that these Sailors volunteer so much of their time is a testament to the caliber of Sailors we have on board this ship."

Carl Vinson CSADD leadership will be recognized during an awards ceremony slated for Nov. 4 in Washington D.C.

Carl Vinson is undergoing a Chief of Naval Operations Planned Incremental Availability maintenance period in its homeport of San Diego.
