DON CIO Reduces Printing, Devices To Save Millions

Published, March 31, 2014

Fast FactDid you know that multifunction devices could save the Department of the Navy $285 million over the Future Years Defense Program?

The DON Chief Information Officer instituted a department-wide policy last year to comprehensively manage print devices. This policy became the cornerstone of the DON Print Management Initiative. The initiative, based on a business case analysis vetted by stakeholders for more than eight months, was tested with a pilot program run by the DON Secretariat. The pilot, involving about half of the DON Secretariat, reduced the number of print devices by 68 percent and resulted in a projected annual savings of $1.64 million. The DON Print Management Initiative is now being implemented across the DON, with full implementation projected by FY19, at which time the DON is expected to achieve savings at the rate of $5M per month, or $60 million per year.
