About Florida State Parks

The first two-time Gold Medal winner honoring the nation's best state park system, the Florida Park Service is one of the largest in the country with 160 parks spanning 700,000 acres and 100 miles of sandy white beach. From swimming and diving in Florida's rivers and springs to birding and fishing or hiking and riding on natural scenic trails, Florida's state parks offer year-round outdoor activities for all ages. Battle reenactments and Native American festivals celebrate Florida's history, while art shows, museums and lighthouses offer a window into Florida's cultural heritage.

The goal of the Florida Park Service is to help create a sense of place by showing park visitors the best of Florida's diverse natural and cultural sites. Florida's state parks are managed and preserved for enjoyment by this and future generations through providing appropriate resource-based recreational opportunities, interpretation and education that help visitors connect to ...the Real FloridaSM.

Office of Greenways and Trails Joins State Parks Family

The Florida Park Service welcomes the award-winning Office of Greenways and Trails to the family. They manage the 110-mile Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway, eight state trails and more. There are many ways to see Florida from a trail: put on your hiking boots or skates, paddle a canoe or kayak or saddle your horse. From the Overseas Heritage Trail that starts in Key Largo and extends to Key West to the Blackwater Heritage State Trail in the panhandle, there's a trail that suits the geography of most citizens and visitors.

In 2008, Florida was named the Best Trails State in the nation by American Trails. The award recognizes the contributions of volunteers, professionals, agencies and other leads who work together to create a national system of trails for all Americans. As the inaugural winner, Florida was recognized for its vision, initiative and management of statewide trails.
