CCAP at COP22 in Marrakech

CCAP is participating in the 22nd Conference of Parties (COP22) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), in Marrakech, Morocco from November 7 – 18. COP22 will build on the landmark Paris Agreement that was signed at COP21 last year in Paris. In the lead-up to COP21, CCAP has been conducting research and analysis on key topics related to the UNFCCC process, including: how the process can facilitate countries’ efforts to convert their Nationally Determined Contributions into policies, measures, and finance-ready investment strategies; and how Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes can be employed and governed to ensure they support the Paris Agreement objectives and allow for greater global ambition. CCAP will continue to work with countries to promote greater climate ambition, including hosting a side event on supporting the development of climate projects in developing countries.

CCAP Side Event: Filling the Pipeline: Support for development of climate projects in developing countries

Scaling up climate investment is critical to achieving the objectives of the Paris Agreement. A shortage of financeable projects is frequently cited as a major barrier to increasing investments in developing countries. This event will address this challenge and present a range of initiatives that provide targeted support for expanding the global project pipeline of projects able to attract finance. Experience will cover both broad-based interventions such as NAMAs with a strong financing component, as well as public-private initiatives that focus on supporting development of commercially viable investment projects.

Practitioners providing project development support will explain their methodology, provide concrete examples and discuss lessons on how to overcome barriers throughout the investment life cycle, thereby accelerating the identification, development and financing of projects.

• Support for NDC Implementation through a Multistakeholder Collaborative Initiative: The BMUB IKI NDC Support Cluster brings together leading climate and development organizations to contribute to the NDC Partnership in a new and collaborative approach.

• Side Event on NAMAs as building blocks to drive NDC implementation – Reflections from the NAMA Facility: Aims to demonstrate how NAMAs can be structured to deliver NDC commitments. Early lessons from NAMAs in Latin America and Asia will be showcased.

Tuesday, November 8,  Nordic Pavilion (Blue Zone)

• Climate and Clean Air Coalition High Level Assembly: Ministers and heads of organizations will focus on opportunities and concrete commetments to reduce methane and black carbon emissions in the oil and gas and transportation sectors, as well as scaling up policy work on black carbon.

Monday, November 14, 4:00 p.m. –  6:40 pm,  Blue Zone

•  Transport Day 2016: Split into two sessions -the first part discusses early lessons learned from NAMA preparation and implementation, as well as how these NAMAs currently integrate with their countries’ NDCs; to what extent NAMAs are reflected in NDCs or not. The second part then reflects the lessons learned in NAMAs and looks ahead with a discussion on challenges and opportunities of sectoral integration in NDCs.
