Biodiesel (B20) Powered Buses Save Energy and Reduce Emissions

DOE Headquarters utilizes two 24 passenger bio-diesel (B20) powered shuttle buses.  The buses run seven times a day, on a 40-mile loop between DOE Headquarters, downtown Washington, DC and Germantown, MD locations. DOE projects the bio-diesel buses, which have double the fuel economy of the former 45-passenger buses, will annually consume approximately 20,000 gallons less fuel. This equates to a savings of more than 23,000 gasoline gallons equivalent or the removal of 53 passenger cars from the roads.

Bio-diesel helps to:

  • Reduce petroleum consumption and dependency on foreign oil
  • Improve air quality
  • Provide outlets for agricultural products

Headquarters employees are reminded of the statutory provisions that authorize and limit the use of the shuttle bus service. Specific authority for the use of appropriated funds to pay for transportation for official purposes is contained in section 1344(a)(1) of Title 31, U.S. Code. Use of this transportation for any other purpose is inappropriate and against the law.
