Communicating Science coverThis report from DBASSE offers a research agenda that can inform efforts to communicate about science effectively, particularly when issues are contentious. The report points to cross-cutting themes for scientists and science communicators to consider in their work, as well as major challenges that should be studied to make science communication more effective. This research agenda should be pursued not only by researchers in academic settings but by researchers and practitioners embedded in various organizations that communicate science.

geosciencesThis publication from BOSE summarizes a workshop held in April 2016 that explored the current and potential role of service-learning in undergraduate geosciences education. “Service-learning” generally refers to projects planned as components of academic coursework in which students use knowledge and skills taught in the course to address real needs in their communities. This kind of learning experience, which allows students to focus on critical, reflective thinking and civic responsibility, has become an increasingly popular component of undergraduate science education.

Evaluation of Achievement Levels NAEP CoverThis new report from the Board on Testing and Assessment evaluates the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) student achievement levels in reading and mathematics in grades 4, 8, and 12 to determine whether the achievement levels are reasonable reliable, valid, and informative to the public, and recommends ways that the setting and use of achievement levels can be improved.
