Excitement is building for the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2015, slated for October 8-18 in Irvine, California. This biannual, award-winning educational program engages collegiate teams worldwide in designing and building higher performing homes than their rivals. The result is the most challenging project these students will undertake during their college years and an exciting competition you won’t want to miss!

The education doesn’t stop there, however. Tens of thousands turn out at each event to learn more about money-saving clean energy products and design solutions to fit their lifestyles. School kids share the excitement during a special Education Days portion of the event. And at the heart of this experience are our volunteers, whose learning is a uniquely hands-on experience.

Want to learn more and pass that on to others?

We still need more volunteers and interns to be part of the action, helping us manage the visitors that tour the Solar Decathlon village. Our volunteers work alongside Solar Decathlon organizers in a variety of roles – greeters, docents, visitor liaisons, and Education Day mentors, to name a few – to ensure the event runs smoothly and that visitors have an exceptional experience. It’s not too late for you to sign up!

The Solar Decathlon is an educational tool for everyone. Since its beginnings in 2002, the Solar Decathlon has demonstrated to the public the comfort and affordability of solar home efficiencies. More than half a million individuals who have come through our Solar Decathlon villages reported a better understanding of how to make their homes more energy efficient. Help us take that message to a million homeowners! Come out and volunteer.

Not everyone can get to California in October, but there’s plenty of ways to spread the news.

Take a tour of a previous Solar Decathlon house, in your region or online. Tune in to up-to-the-minute coverage on our website. Or find resources for homeowners, including a full product directory of appliances and fixtures found in each of the 2013 homes.
