PORTFOLIO ENERGY PERFORMANCE

Better Buildings, Better Plants Challenge partners strive to decrease portfolio-wide source energy use intensity (EUI), and to increase the percent improvement compared to a set baseline. UTC's scope is comprised of 117 facilities, including 111 manufacturing plants. The company is a founding member of the Better Plants Program and stepped up to the Challenge Level in 2014 after meeting its 25% energy intensity reduction target ahead of schedule. It set a new goal of an additional 17.5% energy intensity improvement by 2020 from a 2013 baseline. 2014 was a good year with 8% improvement. 2015 shows a downturn as a result of the divesture of Sikorsky.

ENERGY PERFORMANCE BY FACILITY

All United Technologies sites follow a strict protocol with respect to energy management. Sites are required to track energy consumption, identify significant energy users and create a prioritized list of energy conservation projects that will contribute to goal attainment. A number of UTC sites  in 2015 implemented projects including, building envelop projects, LED Lighting, new high efficiency chillers in Rockford IL manufacturing site, and compressed air projects at the Phoenix site. As a result of these measures, 88 sites show improvement with 25 having improvement over 10%.

METHOD FOR CALCULATING ENERGY PERFORMANCE

United Technologies (UTC) is a diversified company that provides a broad range of high-technology products and services to the global aerospace and building systems industries. UTC’s commercial businesses are Otis elevators and escalators and UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a leading provider of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, fire and security systems, building automation and controls. UTC’s aerospace businesses includes Pratt & Whitney aircraft engines and UTC Aerospace Systems aerospace products. Because of the diversity of its operations, UTC calculates energy intensity at the corporate level with total MMBTU divided by total revenue, adjusted for inflation.

WATER PERFORMANCE: SUMMARY

Better Plants Water Savings partners strive to decrease portfolio-wide fresh water use intensity (WUI), and to increase the percent improvement compared to a set baseline. UTC water and other freshwater is metered and included in the target. Rain water and recycled process waste water is not metered nor included in the target. Percent improvement is calculated from change in absolute numbers. UTC has 119 facilities in the program with 109 being manufacturing sites. UTC has exceeded its 2006 40% goal with an impressive 43% accumulative reduction in 2015.
