Animal Transport for Animal Care Professionals

 

This course covers the theory, concepts, and practical application of animal transport including animal welfare and safety across all taxa. Role-playing of real life shipping scenarios and hands-on crate design and modification create an interactive class experience. Current domestic and international regulatory and legal requirements and guidance will be discussed, as well as best practices for transport. This course provides students with exposure to the philosophies and regulations that will help shape the future of animal transport. 

Course Objectives

After completion of the Animal Transport for Animal Care Professionals Course, students will:

  • Be able to apply best practices when transporting wildlife in a variety of situations
  • Understand the regulatory, methodological, and logistical aspects of transport
  • Understand the basics of transport including the basic physiological changes that animals may experience during transport
  • Understand the importance of planning in animal transport transportation and the types of preparation required
  • Understand general approaches to transport of common zoo animals
  • Have a network of experienced professionals from which to seek additional guidance and offer new ideas to improve on existing practices

Is This Course for You?

This course is designed for curators, collection managers, directors, registrars, keepers, airline personnel, road transporters, and other zoo and animal care professionals involved with transportation logistics of wildlife. Education staff who handle animals and their transport may benefit as well. 

Prerequisites 

None. Priority will be given to AZA members, but volunteers and private animal trainers are welcome to attend. Those not affiliated with an AZA-accredited institution will be considered on a case-by-case basis;  please submit a letter describing your intended benefit from taking this course to azatraining@aza.org for consideration.
