A new component to the eCoastal program is the addition of specialized training for coastal engineers on the tools of the eGIS toolbox. This is a five day course held 2 to 3 times a year at a coastal district. The first 2 days include an Introduction to ArcGIS course by a certified ESRI instructor, followed by 3 days of eCoastal GIS training.
To access the student manual for any Coastal GIS module, follow the links below for the desired module. Each manual is produced in a Microsoft PowerPoint format. To follow the student lessons, you will need to download the student data.

Introduction to eCoastal-Part 1
First module for the eCoastal training program that focuses on What is eCoastal and a brief introduction to using the Spatial Data Standards.
Introduction to eCoastal-Part 2
This module provides instruction on how to access existing coastal web mapping services, importing data into a geodatabase, and creating layer files to display and leverage datasets.

1 - Course Introduction Lecture
1 - Course Introduction Manual
2 - Introduction to Coastal GIS Lecture
The coast is a dynamic setting rich in natural resources. A geographic information system (GIS) is the perfect tool for managing those resources. An important part of any GIS is the creation of metadata that describe the data. Metadata records document geospatial data in a consistent form and help you find data of interest, determine the usefulness of the data, and determine how to access the data. In this exercise you will first locate spatial data of interest on the Internet. Once you have the spatial data, you will then develop the metadata. Finally, you will incorporate all of the information into a geodatabase and gain an understanding of basic geodatabase functionality.
2 - Introduction to Coastal GIS Manual
3 - Impacts To Sensitive Habitats Lecture
In this module you will learn about the coastal setting in the context of habitat conservation of sensitive habitats. The coast of South Carolina is home to numerous species of birds. Under increasing pressure from human interaction, these animals are becoming extremely vulnerable. In order to protect the habitat of the different bird species, it is important to first understand the habitat constraints. It is then important to put into practice specific strategies aimed at protecting the habitats. You will begin by examining the spatial nesting requirements of the Eastern Brown Pelican and then the Royal Tern. Then, you will focus on the identification and protection of its nesting habitat through a series of spatial analyses.
3 - Impacts To Sensitive Habitats Manual
4 - Introduction To GPS Lecture
This module to take you through the basics of Global Positioning Systems (GPS). You will learn the overview of GPS, including theory and how the system works; working with GPS, and GPS/GIS data integration.
5 - Introduction To eCoastal: Data Management Lecture
This module will explain the importance and use of the eCoastal architecture. You will be asked to use the skills and knowledge you gained in this course to access, browse and populate the eCoastal geodatabase.
5 - Introduction To eCoastal: Data Management Manual
6 - eCoastal Applications Lecture
This module will explain the data access procedures used to retrieve and view data stored in the geodatabase. We will also cover the steps necessary for indexing layers stored in the eCoastal system, and demonstrate some of the tools available in the custom toolbars.
6 - eCoastal Applications Manual
7 - eCoastal: Data Visualization & Volume Calculation Lecture
After hearing the lecture and given the topographic and hydrographic data for Panama City, the student will be able to calculate and visualize erosion and accretion changes for the area. In FY06, a new lesson has been added to this module. Participants will be given an introduction to USGS Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) and learn how to calculate shoreline change using this tool and data stored in the eCoastal database.
7 - eCoastal: Data Visualization & Volume Calculation Manual
8 - eCoastal: Sediment Budget Analysis System (SBAS-A) Lecture
A comprehensive Geographic Information System (GIS) enables its users organize, develop and maintain various types of coastal data and resources. GIS provides the tools necessary for spatial data analysis. The purpose of this module is to instruct all levels of GIS users on the processes needed to compute values for a sediment budget in the ArcGIS 9.0 environment.
