Our Mission

The Environment, Biology, Nuclear Science & Nonproliferation (EBNN) Directorate conducts fundamental research and develops technology to enable the transition to a secure, sustainable and resilient low-carbon society.

New Initiatives

  • Quantitative Plant Science Initiative
  • Materials in Radiation Environments
  • NE-Regional Climate Science Initiative

Departments & Centers

Biology

Research in the Biology Department is focused on synthetic biology, radiobiology, computational biology, structural biology and the characterization of biological systems. Together with the Collider-Accelerator Department, Biosciences operates the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory (NSRL), used by radiobiologists and physicists to study space radiation effects.

Environmental and Climate Sciences

Conducts research in aerosol chemistry and microphysics, aerosol related infrastructure, climate and process modeling, cloud processes, data management and software engineering, terrestrial ecosystems, meteorological services, and tracer technologies.

Nonproliferation & National Security

The Nonproliferation and National Security Department carries out research and development, provides technical support, and builds prototype systems to further U.S. government initiatives and policies in nuclear materials safeguards and security, arms control treaty verification, nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction, Material Protection Control and Accountability initiatives for nuclear materials in Russia and the NIS, and related national security areas.

Nuclear Science & Technology

The Department of Nuclear Science and Technology conducts research and development related to nuclear technologies (reactors and accelerator-driven systems), reliability and risk assessment, and advanced modeling techniques for reactor simulation and energy systems.
