June 1997 - Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) has developed a Sun Power for Schools program with a minimum goal of installing 20 kW of PV systems on public school facilities. Customers can make voluntary monthly fixed-dollar or lump-sum contributions at any time. HECO will contribute additional funding (a total of $140,000 for two years). In total, more than 1200 customers had contributed to the program through April 1997, representing about 0.35% of HECO customers system-wide.
