Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)

WindStreet Energy

May 2008 - The Philadelphia Phillies announced a purchase of 20 million kWh of renewable energy certificates (RECs), becoming the first major league baseball team to buy renewable energy to meet 100% of their electricity needs. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, it is also the largest 100% renewable energy purchase to date in U.S. professional sports. The REC supplier is New Jersey-based WindStreet Energy, a subsidiary of NCG Energy Solutions. WindStreet's REC product was recently certified by Green-e.

The Phillies purchase reinforces Major League Baseball's Team Greening Program, designed to support and coordinate "environmentally sensitive practices at each ballclub," created in partnership with the National Resources Defense Council. The purchase also complements the recycling and waste reduction initiatives the Phillies have implemented at their home stadium, Citizens Bank Park, in conjunction with their food and beverage provider, Aramark and facility manager, Global Spectrum. Aramark and Global Spectrum recycle the stadium's frying oil to be used as bio-diesel. They also run programs to reduce consumer waste at the stadium and use bio-degradable service ware and cups.
