January 2012 - The City of Ithaca, New York signed a 2-year power purchase agreement with Integrys Energy Services to purchase 100 percent of the city's electricity consumption from renewable energy sources. Beginning in January 2012, Ithaca will begin purchasing Green-e Energy certified renewable energy certificates to match all of its electricity use.

Ithaca has sourced 5 percent of its electricity from wind farms since 2006, and the new 100-percent green power agreement will help the city move toward its 2016 goal to reduce its carbon footprint by 20 percent.

December 2011 - The Village of Oak Park, Illinois, is initiating a 100% green powered community choice program for its residents and small businesses, which is expected to launch in January 2012. Community choice aggregation enables local governments to aggregate electricity demand within their jurisdictions in order to procure alternative energy supplies while maintaining the existing electricity provider for transmission and distribution services.
Oak Park's Village Board approved a two-year contract with Integrys Energy Services to supply 100% renewable energy certificates for the program. Customers who enroll in the community choice aggregation program will save about 25 percent compared to the current state-approved electricity rates with ComEd, Oak Park's existing electricity provider.

April 2009 - J. C. Penney Company, Inc. and SunPower Corp., a manufacturer of high-efficiency solar panels, announced the completed installation of rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems on five JCPenney stores in New Jersey; the five installations total about 2 megawatts (MW). The initiative is part of a commitment to host 3.7 MW, between the announced New Jersey installations and an additional four installations at California JCPenney locations, completed in 2008. The nine PV systems vary in size from 259 to 602 kilowatts (kW) and are anticipated to generate the equivalent of an average of 25% of each store’s energy demand.

Each system is owned and operated by Integrys Energy Services, Inc. Under power purchase agreements, JCPenney purchases the systems’ electricity from Integrys on an ongoing basis, and Integrys retains ownership of the renewable energy certificates (RECs) associated with the systems.

In addition to hosting the solar power systems, JCPenney has also been recently recognized for its work in energy management, receiving the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award in March 2009.
