The Power to Choose Renewable Energy

By signing up for NIPSCO’s Green Power Program, you can choose to have a portion or all of your monthly electric usage to be attributable to power generated by renewable energy sources, such as wind power. When you sign up, NIPSCO buys renewable energy certificates (RECs) on your behalf. It currently costs less than $2 more per month for the average home (based on a monthly electric use of 1,000 kWh) to receive 100% of its electricity from renewable sources! This added cost is passed along to participating customers without any additional markup from NIPSCO.

It only takes a few minutes. Log on to your account or call 1-800-464-7726 (1-800-4NIPSCO) and choose option 4, then option 6.

How does the program work?

NIPSCO electric customers may designate 25, 50 or 100 percent of their monthly electric usage to be attributable to power generated by renewable energy sources. Commercial and industrial customers have the added flexibility to designate 5 or 10 percent of their monthly usage.

NIPSCO will purchase RECs on your behalf, which act like a tracking system, so we know how much renewable energy is going into the grid.

You will continue to receive your electricity bill from NIPSCO. And you may change your participation level or cancel at any time. There is no fee to cancel.

Your purchase of renewable energy certificates (RECs) is supporting renewable electricity production in Midwestern states. For every unit of renewable electricity generated, an equivalent amount of RECs is produced. The purchase of RECs helps offset conventional electricity generation in the region where the renewable electricity generator is located. The purchase also helps build a market for renewable electricity and may have other local and global environmental benefits such as reducing global climate change and regional air pollution.

NIPSCO Green Power Program RECs are Green-e Energy certified, and meet environmental and consumer-protection standards set forth by the nonprofit Center for Resource Solutions. Learn more at www.green-e.org.

Green-e Energy

How much does it cost?

Customers who enroll in the Green Power Program will pay a monthly premium in addition to NIPSCO’s standard, regulated electric rate. The added costs are passed through directly to customers, with no mark up or financial return for NIPSCO. Non-participating customers are not responsible for additional charges associated with making this program available.

NIPSCO’s current green power rate is $0.000765 per kilowatt-hour (“kWh”). The chart below will help show how the premiums will work.

The NIPSCO green power rate is subject to change depending upon the source of renewable energy certificates and number of participants in the program, and may be adjusted twice each year through filings with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC). Visit this page for the most up-to-date rate information.
