Volunteers came to the rescue when they restored a plot of bare ground badly damaged by heavy construction equipment in the Schoolyard Habitat.
First we used a technique called lasagna layering to kill and compost unwanted grass and weeds. Then we added compost to improve and prepare healthy soil. Master Gardeners chose a variety of native plants suitable for the soil and growing conditions and designed the layout for the 1700 square foot section of garden. The result after three months of preparation - a paradise for pollinators and an opportunity for visitors to observe them in their natural habitat. Come and enjoy!

The scarlet tanager (Piranga olivacea) is a medium sized song bird native to the northeast upland forest. Tanagers are often hard to spot as they frequent the highest reaches of the tree canopy. The brilliant red and black plumage of the breeding male is a treat to see. Tanagers seek out insects during the summer months and fruits during migration back to their wintering grounds in the tropics.
