Since joining the U. S. Department of Energy in 2006, Dr. Fiechtner has been program manager for the Condensed Phase and Interfacial Molecular Science (CPIMS) Program, which is contained in the Chemical Physics Program. From 2004 through 2006, he worked on assignment from Sandia National Laboratories (Livermore, CA) as a program manager for the Separations and Analysis Program.
Prior to joining the DOE, Dr. Fiechtner was a researcher at Sandia with the Microfluidics Department (2002-2006) and the Engine Combustion research group (2000-2002). Dr. Fiechtner joined Sandia in 2000 from the Fuels & Lubrication Division of the Aero Propulsion and Power Directorate at the Air Force Research Laboratory and Innovative Scientific Solutions, Inc., in Dayton, Ohio. Previously, he was a postdoctoral researcher under the supervision of Dr. Robert Barlow in the Combustion Research Facility at Sandia, a visiting instructor at the University of Colorado (Boulder, CO), and a visiting researcher at the Colorado School of Mines (Golden, CO). Dr. Fiechtner received a Ph.D. in 1992 and an M.S. in 1989 from Purdue University (West Lafayette, IN) under the supervision of Professors Normand Laurendeau, Galen King, and Fred Lytle. His thesis research concerned the use of short-pulse laser spectroscopy for combustion diagnostics. He received a B. S. in 1986 from the University of Nebraska (Lincoln, NE). Each of his degrees is in mechanical engineering. He is the co-author of 30 peer-reviewed articles and more than 200 conference papers, reports, and abstracts. For his efforts in the development of intellectual property, he has been awarded eight U.S. patents in coherent, broadband laser scattering (for characterizing gas-turbine combustors), microfluidic medical diagnostics, and generalized electrohydrodynamic design. Dr. Fiechtner holds membership in the American Chemical Society, the Optical Society of America, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the Combustion Institute. He is a Purdue University Outstanding Mechanical Engineer and an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
