Waterbird Conservation

The Migratory Bird Program is engaged in a variety of activities to ensure colonial-nesting waterbird populations remain healthy including monitoring of nesting colonies, conducting or funding research, and restoring nesting habitats. Program staff also address the conservation needs of secretive marsh birds and island-nesting seabirds.  The Program has a coordinator responsible for facilitating, promoting and developing waterbird conservation initiatives alongside many other domestic and international partners. Some of our coordinator duties include facilitating implementation of the  Waterbird Conservation for the Americas initiative, providing waterbird technical assistance to the National Wildlife Refuge System, and developing focal species conservation plans for high priority waterbirds.
