Shelby County is a community blessed with great geography, a wonderful quality of life, the world's best airport, and a logistics infrastructure that is unmatched anywhere.

Over the past three years, its MSA has enjoyed record-breaking growth, reaching an all-time high in 1999 with more than $1.65 billion in new capital investment. In fact, Shelby County has led the state of Tennessee in economic growth for the past two years. Meanwhile the area's widely recognized role as America's Distribution Center is morphing into a new reality - North America's Logistics Center.

Driving Forces Behind Shelby County's Growth
Driving this expansion is the Memphis International Airport; the rapid growth of FedEx Corporation, UPS, the USPS Bulk Mail Facility, and other overnight carriers; as well as the convergence of five Class I intermodal railroads.

Shelby County's physical location, just below the snow line at the geographic heart of America, also helps truckers reliably reach two-thirds of the American population in two days or less. Additionally, the majestic Mississippi River gives Shelby County a significant presence on the nation's major inland waterway.

From the new, two-mile long third runway at Memphis International Airport, fully-loaded air cargo jets are now able to fly nonstop to almost every major city in the developed world. Meanwhile, plans continue for a completed Interstate 69 that will connect Mexico and Canada (with Shelby County firmly as its hub) and a super terminal at the Port of Memphis that will facilitate state-of-the-art intermodal transfer of cargo.
