About

Dr. Allen White is a research meteorologist with NOAA’s Earth System Research Laboratory in Boulder, Colorado, where he currently leads the Hydrometeorological Observations and Processes Team of the Physical Sciences Division. His research interests are in boundary layers and turbulence, coastal weather, precipitation science, air pollution meteorology, and instrument algorithm development. Dr. White currently is leading an effort to provide 21st-century observations, forecast models, display systems, and decision support tools to bear on California’s water resource and flood management concerns. Dr. White received his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Brown University. Subsequently he worked for two years on designing power plants for the nuclear Navy at Bechtel’s Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory. Fueled by a passion for winter storms, he studied at The Pennsylvania State University, where he earned his Master’s and PhD degrees in Meteorology (1989, 1996). Dr. White is the author of more than 50 scientific journal articles, and he has received several awards and a U.S. patent for his research.
